About Seràgnoli

The Institute of hematology (Seràgnoli) is a department of the Bologna University Hospital S.Orsola. It is among the three top hematology centers in Italy. Its main focus of research includes:

  • the diagnosis and treatment of lymphomas,
  • the diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma
  • the diagnosis and treatment of acute leukemias

The institute is leader in the clinical research of the use of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). It performs between 50 and 60 allogeneic HSC transplants each year.
Ongoing clinical trials of transplantation and cell therapy include:

  • Intra bone infusion of cord blood hematopoietic stem cells in adult patients with high risk hematologic diseases, NCT00886522, PI Francesca Bonifazi;
  • Adoptive Immunotherapy of High Risk Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia Patients Using Haploidentical KIR-Mismatched Natural Killer Cells, NCT00799799, PI Antonio Curti;
  • Phase I study of Intrahepatic Reinfusion of highly purified CD133+ stem cells in patients with end-stage liver disease, EUDRACT number 2009-011783-10;
  • A study of the function of the immune system in patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT, EC code 136/2012/O, PI Mario Arpinati

The cell factory “CALORI” in Milano, which is the subcontractor for Treg isolation and expansion, is a GMP facility devoted to the production of cellular therapy products. Its clinical activities started in 2004. On July 5th 2007, the Cell Factory Calory was the first Italian public Institution to be authorized by AIFA (Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco) for the production of cellular products, thus setting itself in Europe as an authorized facility for the supply of these new and promising "drugs".
